1. Introduction

Welcome to SmartScan ("we," "our," "us," or "the App"). SmartScan is an offline-focused productivity, document scanner, and student utility application designed to help users scan, organize, and export documents directly from their mobile devices. SmartScan is built with a privacy-first philosophy: the core scanning and document-processing features are designed to work entirely on your device, without requiring an internet connection or uploading your personal documents to any external server.

This Privacy Policy explains what information SmartScan collects (if any), how that information is used, and your rights regarding your data. By downloading, installing, or using SmartScan, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the App.

2. Information Collection and Local Processing

SmartScan's document scanning, image cropping, perspective correction, filtering, and PDF/image/ZIP export functions are all performed locally on your device using on-device processing (native canvas and image-processing libraries). This means:

  • Photos and documents you scan or import are not transmitted, uploaded, or stored on any external server or cloud service operated by us.
  • The images, PDFs, and files you create using SmartScan remain in your device's local storage or cache unless you explicitly choose to export, download, or share them yourself (for example, via the Share feature to a third-party app of your choosing).
  • We do not have access to, and cannot view, copy, or retrieve, the content of documents you scan using the App.

While the core scanning functionality is offline and local, certain parts of the App (such as advertising and subscription services, described below) may involve limited data collection by trusted third-party service providers in order to operate.

2.1 Information We May Automatically Collect

Like most mobile applications, SmartScan and its third-party service providers may automatically collect certain non-personal, technical information for the purposes of app functionality, analytics, advertising, and crash diagnostics, including:

  • Device type, manufacturer, and operating system version
  • App version and installation identifiers
  • Advertising identifiers (such as Google Advertising ID / GAID)
  • General usage data (e.g., features used, session length, crash logs)
  • Approximate, non-precise location data (derived from IP address), if required by an integrated service such as advertising

This information does not directly identify you by name and is used solely for the purposes described in this policy.

3. Third-Party Services

3.1 Google AdMob (Advertising)

SmartScan uses Google AdMob, a mobile advertising service provided by Google LLC, to display banner and interstitial advertisements within the free version of the App. AdMob may collect and process certain data in order to serve advertisements, including:

  • Device identifiers (such as the Google Advertising ID)
  • IP address and approximate location
  • App usage and interaction data (e.g., ad impressions, clicks)
  • Device and browser characteristics

This data may be used by Google to serve personalized ads (based on your interests and activity) or non-personalized ads (based on contextual information only), depending on your consent choices, regional regulations (such as GDPR or CCPA), and device-level advertising settings.

Google's use of advertising data is governed by Google's own privacy and advertising policies. We encourage you to review:

You can opt out of personalized advertising, or reset/limit your advertising identifier, at any time through your device settings (Settings → Google → Ads, on most Android devices).

3.2 Other Third-Party SDKs

In addition to Google AdMob, SmartScan may use other trusted third-party SDKs (such as Google Play Billing and RevenueCat, described below, and Capacitor plugins for camera, sharing, filesystem, and notifications) strictly to enable core app functionality. These SDKs operate under their own respective privacy policies and are only granted the minimum data access required to function.

4. In-App Purchases & Subscriptions

SmartScan offers optional premium subscription plans — including Monthly, Annual, and Lifetime plans — which unlock premium features such as an ad-free experience.

  • All purchases and subscriptions are processed securely through Google Play Billing, Google's official in-app purchase and payment system for Android.
  • Subscription management (such as tracking entitlement status, renewals, and cross-device access to premium features) is handled through RevenueCat, a subscription infrastructure provider.
  • We do not collect, view, transmit, or store any financial information, including credit/debit card numbers, bank details, or other payment credentials. All payment details are handled exclusively and securely by Google Play Billing.
  • RevenueCat may receive a non-financial, anonymized purchase token and app-specific user identifier in order to validate your subscription status. RevenueCat does not have access to your actual payment method details.

For more information on how these providers handle data, please refer to:

Subscriptions can be managed, modified, or cancelled at any time via the Google Play Store app under "Subscriptions."

5. Permissions

To provide its core features, SmartScan requests the following device permissions. Each permission is used strictly for its stated purpose, and no permission is used to collect data beyond what is necessary for the App's functionality:

  • Camera: Required to allow you to scan physical documents directly using your device's camera. Captured images are processed locally and are not transmitted anywhere by SmartScan.
  • Storage / Media (Photos and Media, Read Media Images): Required to let you import existing images from your gallery for scanning, and to save exported PDFs, images, or ZIP archives to your device.
  • Notifications: Used to notify you when a document export or download has completed successfully.
  • Internet / Network State: Used only to display ads (via Google AdMob), validate subscription status (via Google Play Billing / RevenueCat), and check connectivity — not to transmit your scanned documents.
  • Wake Lock / Scheduled Alarms: Used solely to support reliable local notifications (such as export-complete alerts).

You may deny or revoke any of these permissions at any time via your device's Settings menu. Please note that denying certain permissions (such as Camera) may limit or disable specific features of the App.

6. Children's Privacy & Data Security

6.1 Children's Privacy

SmartScan is not directed at, and is not intended for use by, children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required by applicable local law). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information without verified parental consent, we will take steps to delete such information promptly. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details in Section 7 so we can take appropriate action.

Note: SmartScan's advertising partner, Google AdMob, is configured to serve ads in a manner appropriate to our intended audience. If SmartScan is used by a school or student audience under applicable education-focused programs, ad requests may be tagged accordingly to comply with child-directed treatment requirements where applicable.

6.2 Data Security

We take reasonable administrative, technical, and physical measures designed to protect information associated with SmartScan from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Since your scanned documents are processed and stored locally on your own device rather than on our servers, the security of that data is also dependent on your device's own security settings (such as screen lock, encryption, and OS-level protections).

While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect data handled by third-party services integrated into the App (such as AdMob and RevenueCat), no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable data protection laws (such as the GDPR in the European Economic Area, or the CCPA in California), including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of personal data collected by third-party services used within the App (such as AdMob). Since SmartScan itself does not operate servers that store your personal documents, most such requests should be directed to the relevant third-party provider (Google, for AdMob and Play Billing; RevenueCat, for subscription data) or exercised via your device's privacy settings. We are happy to assist in directing such inquiries — please contact us using the information below.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, features, or legal requirements. Any changes will be posted on this page with a revised "Last Updated" date. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically. Continued use of SmartScan after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.

9. Contact Information
